The Gamification of Pulmonary Rehabilitation

Alvio is the only respiratory rehabilitation device that both measures and tracks spirometry readings while training respiratory muscles. Alvio creates long term behavior change by gamifying the hard work of doing respiratory therapy, so patients adhere to their exercise program longer, and quickly improve their respiratory health. Instead of just blowing into a tube to make a ball rise, Alvio users play a variety of games on an iPad and control the game by blowing into the Alvio. There is a SCUBA diver game where the patient can move the diver up to touch a buoy for 500 points, and if they can inhale hard enough to get back down to the clam in time they score an 800 point bonus.
The engineers and designers at inch developed the first working Alvio device, shown above, creating a manufacturable digital pneumotachometer that can measure flow rate and volume, provide adjustable resistance and connect over Bluetooth to an iPad. We integrated Alvio’s unique electronics in an injection molded housing. We included a replaceable filter making it safe for multiple users, and our design team made it comfortable in the hand while giving it a great look. Users are now able to provide accurate usage data to their doctors, and are spending a lot more time doing therapy than ever before.
